AMATOL
Composition
A mixture of ammonium nitrate and TNT; the percentage of ammonium nitrate varies from 40 to 80 percent.
Melting point
A mixture consisting of 80 percent ammonium nitrate and 20 percent TNT by weight does not melt. As the concentration of TNT increases, the mixture melts approximately to the TNT melting temperature of 81°С
Solubility
TNT dissolves in acetone and dimethylformamide; ammonium nitrate dissolves well in water.
Application
The explosive substance of the main charge, which is used in almost all foreign countries. Used in the US as an explosive substitute in 3-inch, 155mm and larger shells. Also used in bombs and Bangalore torpedoes.
Note
It is very hygroscopic, so it is usually protected by a hermetic filling of TNT. In the presence of moisture, it attacks copper, brass and bronze, forming dangerously sensitive compounds. When dry, it can corrode steel. When hot, it becomes liquid or plastic.
