AMMONAL
Amonal (AMMONAL) is a brizant BP. Explosive mixture containing ammonium nitrate, TNT and aluminum powder. A main charge explosive reportedly used by most foreign countries.
Composition
Explosive mixture containing ammonium nitrate, TNT and aluminum powder.
Melting point
Mixtures with less than 40% TNT do not melt. Mixtures containing more than 40% TNT form a suspension of aluminum in molten TNT at temperatures above 81°C.
Solubility
Ammonium nitrate dissolves in water; TNT dissolves in acetone and carbon tetrachloride; aluminum does not dissolve in most solvents.
Application
A main charge explosive reportedly used by most foreign countries. Used in UK underwater munitions. The US uses this type of explosive for better observation during range tests of high-explosive shells due to the bright flash that is produced.
