Composition

Monobasic: Compositions containing mainly nitrocellulose. May contain other ingredients such as stabilizer, inorganic nitrates, nitro compounds and non-explosive materials to help reduce hygroscopicity, decomposition and flash. Bibasic: Compositions containing nitrocellulose and a liquid organic nitrate, such as nitroglycerin. Often contains additives similar to a single-base powder in addition to a stabilizer. Multibase: Compositions containing nitrocellulose, liquid organic nitrate (nitroglycerin), and nitroguanidine, as well as stabilizers and other ingredients, as in monobase propellant.

Solubility

Most of these powders dissolve in a mixture of ether with ethyl alcohol or in acetone.

Toxicity

Relatively non-toxic and usually does not cause dermatitis. Excessive handling of dibasic powders can cause toxic effects characteristic of its components.

Single Core: Used in small arms, grenades, and artillery pieces. Double base: Used in small arms, mortars, artillery pieces, rockets. Multicharge: Used as gunpowder.
